Hi Everyone.
Well, this past weekend I spoke at the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) conference in Columbus, Ohio.
It was a fantastic experience. My presentation went very well, and I met lots of interesting people.
I found the city to be beautiful, and the food was wonderful.
But getting there was a challenge! I flew from NY to Philly with no problem. But my flight from Philly to Columbus was cancelled. The flights were all booked, and there were no trains or buses to be had.
So I rented a car (ugh, don't ask). I drove all night to get to the conference. It was about a ten hour drive from Philly to Columbus, through the dark and winding desolation of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Trust me, this is not a road for the faint of heart.
But I made it. I got to my hotel at 8:30 in the morning; just enough time to shower, get dressed, and find my conference room (my presentation was at 9:50am).
What a day! But everything turned out wonderfully well.
And how was your experience at AASL???

My librarian and I attended your session and loved it. We are getting ready to start a writing center in our library. I was hoping to find more information on here such as handouts or plans to help guide us. We have many of our own ideas, but we love to see a model as we create. Do you have any guidance for us as we dive in?

Hello Jen!
I'm delighted that you're starting a School Library Writing Center (SLWC)!
Yes, I have plenty of guidance. I have to admit...I wrote the book on this subject - literally! It will be out this coming June.
But until then...have you read my articles in School Library Monthly? I wrote eight articles about how to set up and run a SLWC.
If at all possible, please try to read those articles. They make a nice overview of the process. And I think they're available through the ProQuest databases.
Until then, please feel free to send me questions, and I'll send you solid answers. I know pretty much everything there is to know on this subject.
Talk soon!
And remember, if you're not having fun with your writing center, you're doing something wrong.
~Tim
